The Japanese kanji in the calligraphy above — Dai Ko Myo, "Great Light Sun-and-Moon" — was used by both Mikao Usui (founder of Reiki) and Mokichi Okada (founder of Johrei) in the process of energetically empowering their students.
* I must advise CAUTION when using Jourei, however. I felt for years that, like Reiki, the energy of Jourei could never do any harm. I have come to realize, however, that we can indeed get too much Jourei, too fast. Jourei is a channeled energy that comes to us from outside, and its purifying effects can be dangerously overwhelming if we take too much of it too quickly. I still have seen no evidence of such a thing with Reiki, and I believe it's because Reiki, being an energy within us from the beginning, is impeccably regulated by our own body.
Jourei + Reiki / Jou-Rei-KiJOU-REI ("purifying spirit") comes to us from outside and burns away the spiritual clouds we have accumulated. REI-KI ("spirit energy") opens the connection, inside us, to our divine Source and true Self — bringing in the Source, from the spiritual dimension, to fill us and radiate outward. When Jourei and Reiki are used together in sequence, the effect is even better than when using either one alone. The Jourei, by dissolving and removing accumulated toxins, allows us to receive greater and quicker benefits from the Source-energy brought in by the Reiki. In Japan, the homeland of Reiki and Jourei, palm-healing methods have long been practiced and respected. Now, as people everywhere become more aware of what disease and healing really are, natural methods of well-being are growing in popularity. As modern pharmaceutical medicine becomes ever-more unsustainable financially, and its true function is revealed to be merely the suppression of symptoms (which in fact prevents healing from occurring), people are moving away from it and back to traditional methods of real healing — based on understanding the workings of energy. Jourei, Reiki, and Macrobiotics are just three among many. The very supposition that modern pharmaceutical medicine is traditional and the others are "alternative" turns reality upside-down! The aspirin tablet has a shorter history than Coca-Cola (which was also invented by a pharmacist : ^ ) — and the so-called alternatives are based in timeless, universal understandings. Besides providing the great advantage of true healing and Self-realization (compared to the masking of symptoms and the added toxicity of pharmaceutical drugs), these natural methods can be easily learned and practiced by almost everyone. We don't have to be dependent on others for our well-being!
