23 January 2010:
What Else Can We Do For Haiti?
"Peace" calligraphy by Rev. Henry Ajiki
Rev. Henry Ajiki was one of two people chosen in 1953 to bring Johrei from Japan to America. He and Rev. Kiyoko Higuchi established a Johrei Center in Honolulu, then in Los Angeles, and then Henry started a Center in Tucson. Though he is now officially retired from ministerial duties, he is still at the Tucson Center and very much involved with Johrei activities. And he customarily comes up to Mesa — where I live now — every January, and makes calligraphies for Johrei members here.
Having learned from the founder of Johrei himself (Mokichi Okada / Meishu-sama), Henry is a fountain of Johrei knowledge and really an undeclared National Treasure ... and we are blessed and delighted always by his presence. His arrival in January to do calligraphies is a very special event for us. Each person's calligraphy can set a theme for the whole year.
Peace through surrender
This year, for my calligraphy, I chose Peace. It seems to me, that is what the whole world needs most now. Peace is the starting point for all our dreams and efforts toward a better world. Without peace, we will not get anywhere. And, before we even think of resolving our wars with other people, the first thing we must do is to make peace with ourselves, each of us. We do that by accepting and loving ourselves, including our weaknesses. We have to surrender to what IS, before we can improve it.
Once we surrender in ourselves — surrender our personal will to the will of the One Spirit — we stop fighting ourselves, and then we can stop fighting things outside us.* Surrendering and accepting what IS, is the first step toward stopping all the wars: the War on Terror, the War on Drugs, the War on Poverty, the War on Obesity, the War on Smoking.... (And how could I almost forget the War on Cancer, our trustworthy nemesis for so many decades?! : ^ )
* It's interesting to note that the word islam means "surrender." In the religion of Islam, it means specifically to achieve peace through surrendering the personal will to the will of God — and Islam sees itself not as conflicting with Judaism and Christianity, but as the next step in their lineage. Muhammad is considered to be the last in the line of prophets starting with Adam, including Noah, Abraham, Moses and others, up through Jesus. (Of course, as we know all too well, the fanatical fringe have hijacked the concept of Islam and redefined it as surrender at the point of a sword.)
Here comes the sun!
Thoughts of Johrei have been in my mind lately, more than usual — especially with seeing Henry. Some of them have even condensed into a new web page on Johrei. I've been thinking a lot about the purification by Fire that Meishu-sama wrote about decades ago. He felt that Johrei (being a combination of Fire and Water energies) was uniquely suited for purifying ourselves enough to survive the coming cosmic purification by Fire. He may have been right ... though it seems to me that any method of purification/enlightenment/Self-realization will do just as well. All roads lead to Self-realization, because there is nowhere else to go! Any spiritual practice that scrubs away our delusion, our phoniness, our dishonesty, our destructive ways of thinking — or burns away our spiritual clouds, as Meishu-sama described it — brings about purification and Self-realization.
I've been thinking a lot about this purification by Fire, because I've been experiencing it a lot: especially from the sun! The first such episode that caught my awareness was over a year ago, and there have been several more since then. They begin with a feeling that I've been totally drained of energy; it's nearly impossible for me to do anything but collapse in a heap. Even opening my eyes is a lot of work, and even breathing. And the body aches everywhere, and feels as fragile as a sheet of ancient parchment — as if a slight touch could crumble it to dust!
The most unpleasant thing is the super-awareness of this misery, and not being able to sleep. This usually lasts 2 or 3 days, and then some sleep is finally obtained — usually short periods of sleep, each followed by waking up drenched in cold sweat, which removes a load of toxins ... and then my energy and well-being return.
This seems to be happening with everyone, and manifesting as different symptoms in different people. Some people report mysterious bouts of dizziness, or nausea, or tingling-sparkling sensations in the body, or enormous discharges of mucus from the nose. I say "mysterious" because there is no medical explanation for them. I've heard from so many people, with all kinds of symptoms, who have gone to doctors, to find out what is "wrong" with them — and all the doctors and all the high-tech medical tests are finding ... nothing! : ^ )
I believe this is happening even with animals. A recent email from a friend in Istanbul (who is an MD herself) described the same symptoms I've been going through — which she had observed in her cat! The cat seemed to be near death, but for no visible reason. Then, in a few days, the cat was back to normal. Then, after going outside and being gone for 2 days (out in the sunshine) ... it returned with just enough energy to collapse in a near-death heap again!
We are surely receiving various cosmic energies all the time — but I feel that we are being predominantly affected by the sun. Not only because of what Meishu-sama said about purification by Fire, and because of other things I've read (including the scientific confirmations of increased solar activity), but because of what I feel happening in myself.
All this reminded me of an article I read almost 3 years ago, written by someone named Michael Brown. It was a very deep analysis of the sun — especially of how, as the heart of our universe, the sun is so intimately related to the human heart. His article rang so true to me, and reminded me so much of things Meishu-sama had said, that I wanted to read it again now. It's rather long, but if you take the time to read it, I think you'll find it very worthwhile: Here Comes The Sun. You may also hear the ring of truth in his 2010 New Year Letter, and elsewhere on his site.
